OVERVIEW

This case study was done during my studies on AP Multimedia Design and Communication course. The goal of the project was to redesign product filtering and sorting system for Temashop website to make it simple, user friendly and easy to use.

ABOUT TEMASHOP

Temashop is a costume, accessories and party supplies company located in Federicia, Denmark. They are experts in theme parties with 10-year experience providing easy, cheap and fast solutions for everyone in need of a costume. Since 2016 Temashop has a physical store, however, most of the sales come from the web shop, where they offer more than 30,000 products for fixed low prices. Their vision is to be the preferred web shop company in the field for Danish market.

CHALLANGES

How to effectively implement filtering system that is easy to use?

How to make the filtering system extensive enough so the users can find exactly what they are looking for ?

How to redesign the website to make it user friendly and attractive.

1. PRODUCT DEFINITION

Stakeholder Interviews

In order to learn more about TEMASHOP itself and to understand the reasons for the need of the filtering system initial stakeholder interviews were conducted. These interviews gave insights of the target audience, the problem, main competitors, brand guidelines and the desired outcome from this project.

Value Propositioning Map

Value proposition map was created in order to help to define what the product is and how to mach the users needs, who will use it, and why the user would use it.

Information Architecture

Examination of filtering/sorting system of existing website was conducted to see how easy or difficult it is to find a certain product and if products are located in places where users expect to find them. Usability testing and card sorting was done.

Mood board

Mood board was created to define the branding and styling of the website.

2. RESEARCH

User Research

As a part of user research online survey and user interviews were done to understand their background, goals, frustrations and shopping motivations.

Quantitative Research

In order to gain understanding and design proper sorting and filtering feature for Temashop it was necessary to do research and look at several websites that provide filtering options. Some of the websites include booking.com, partyinabox.dk, coolstuff.dk, costumesupercenter.com and hm.com. By looking at these websites, it became clear that the best solution is to have options where people can tick the needed ones, while leaving out the options that are irrelevant. For instance, booking.com is an excellent example for filtering feature, since it has many categories based on price range, location, distance, reviews and availability, and at the end they provide the most suitable options to customer’s needs. Therefore, their filtering solution is taken as inspiration.

3. ANALYSIS

User Persona Development

Using all information gathered from stakeholder interviews and research about target audience User Persona was created to represent target user and help to stay focused throughout the project.

User Stories

User stories were created to help to understand the filtering system in Temashop website from user’s point of view.

Competitive Analysis

Competitor websites were examined in order to find the most efficient filtering systems and combine the best features in Temashop website.

4. DESIGN

Prototype Development

During this stage I developed a prototype in Adobe XD of the website with all the needed features implemented. To see how the the prototyped website looks and works please watch the video.

5. VALIDATION

User Testing

User tests with 3 persons who represent our target audience were made. Websites prototype was used to conduct the user tests. There were 3 tasks to fulfil:

1. Task: Users were asked to find a specific item in the web-shop – Vampire Woman Halloween costume.
Results: The user first tried typing in the search which suggest the importance of the search bar. Later the user use the filtering system and was able to easily find the needed product.

1. Task: Users were asked to find all products that can be delivered within 1-2 working days.
Results: Task was successful and all three participants were able to find how to sort the items to find the needed ones.

1. Task: Users were asked to find gadgets that are on sale in the web-shop.
Results: 1 out of 2 participants struggles to find the gadgets on sale items, user was searching in the costume section.
Conclusion: It needs to be more clear of how to navigate back to home page and navigation to different shop sections could be made easier.
